First off, let me say I am a huge fan of the UKPK. I have been waiting awhile for the variant of this knife, the Urban.

And now it's here, but with great disappointment, not made with S30V and not made in the USA.:thumbdn:

I guess I shouldn't be surprised given the direction Spyderco has gone.

Sorry just had to vent, I won't be buying one after all. :grumpy:

The direction Spyderco has gone? I didn't realize Syderco's relationship with Japanese manufacturers was new.

5.56, I'm sure you know that some of Spyderco's mainstay knives (Endura, Delica & others) have been made in Japan for a long time.

And still are.

Allow me to clarify, obviously Spyderco has been making Japanese knives for many years, everyone knows this.

Recent discussions with Sal have concluded that it is Spyderco's intent to make more US versions, that's coming right from Sal himself.

Well according to the 2009 catalog, out of the 40+ models available, only 6 are made in the US.

That is what I meant by my statement of the company's direction.

And I am not trying to make this into a political discussion, I am more disappointed that it's not S30V like it's counterpart

I see. Well, to me the important thing is that Spyderco adapts to a changing world economy. If such adaptation requires outsourcing to remain competitive, so be it. For me, the bottom line is that the product be well designed, well made and a good value. To date, Spyderco has fulfilled all of those criteria.

"The bottom line."

Always about the "bottom line." :barf:

Yeah, I would have also liked to see this "mini UKPK" made in the US.

Like it or not, everything has to be about "the bottom line", since the alternative is bankruptcy and no more Spyderco knives from anywhere.

And I think this thread belongs in the Political Arena, since the issue involved has nothing to do with the knives themselves, only the country of origin.

Actually, the Japanese have been making Spyderco knives for many years. And you forgot one of the Golden made knives, it's 7 models made there, not 6. If you're that worked up about it why didn't you do some research before you purchased the knife?

OK, not totally off topic since the 2009 catalog was mentioned-
what is the top knife of 5 pictured, clipped to the the reed at the beginning of the product guide? Page 9 of the PDF version.

I guess one question I have is, why is the Urban VG-10?

What's wrong with S30V? It worked for the UKPK? And clearly, the Urban is a variant of the UKPK.

Why the switch?

I agree with 5.56, I wish the new urban was in S30V like the UKPK.

on a side note, hey mogomondo who is that lady on your avitar? She is hot (no disrespect intended).

Since when is VG-10 inferior to S30V?

I'd say they are about equal, overall. S30V might hold a better edge, but VG-10 should be tougher and more chip resistant.

I think edge holding would come into play much more frequently than toughness considering the design being discussed. I too would of preferred S30V, but will probably end up with one at some point anyways.
