I went to visit my folks last night and as we drove in I noticed a very large Red-tail hawk across the street that appeared to have a broken wing. The otherwise majestic bird of prey had a commanding stance, but had its right wing outstretched and at an odd angle. I feared it had perhaps been hit by a car and was hobbling around...as I was trying to figure out what to do, it started hobbling around and a large black bird (really large...perhaps a crow or raven) started dive bombing the hawk.
The hawk turned to address the incoming black bird and as it adjusted its footing, a squirrel shot out from its grasp!
My family and I stood there a gasp and the hawk took chase on the squirrel as the black bird chased him (or her).
Long story short the squirrel got away (NEVER seen one run THAT fast!) and the hawk was chased away by the black bird. We were speechless about it. what a lucky day for the squirrel...and an unlucky day for the hawk
Not sure why it was holding its wing out like that...it seemed to work just fine!
I SOOOO wish I had thought to get my phone out to video that transaction!
Anyway, as we got closer to my folks house, I noticed this little grass snake in the yard. It appears he (or she) survived a near miss also (damaged scales about an inch down from the head).
The boys and I enjoyed looking at this little guy before we sent him on his way back into the yard.
