Came across this video and figured a discussion on Urban Foraging might be interesting.

Anyone do it ? Might be cool to head out and see just what you see in your local urban setting that would assist the desperate survivor....pics always welcome !;)

I took a class a few years back and have one scheduled for this year. The class I took was a walk through the teachers neighborhood. It was pretty fun. There were a lot of edibles in the area. The laws in our city(Portland) are such that the owner is responsible for maintaining the area between the sidewalk and the road but it's not actually their property. So as such you can pick from those plants as you like. Still it's best to be polite and ask first. I've seen homeowners plant small gardens in this area and I wonder if they're aware that anyone can harvest their hardwork.

Quite facinating. I've shot and eaten pigeon before. Only got into the first 4 minutes as I have to go. Makes me want to take my scoped pellet gun out. Have to watch the rest later.

When I lived in San Francisco, I had no problem catching crabs where he caught the bike. They were very easy.

Plenty of raccoons there, too. We had a family of them living next door, and we could see them walking across our skylights at night.

In a true emergency, every city in the country has a healthy population of pigeons that can be harvested. And just about every city I have ever been in had a lot of ducks and geese in the park ponds, and they have no fear of humans. It would be no problem to catch some of them, too. When I was a poor grad student, I would take my kids to the park and feed the ducks and geese. They would eat out of my hand, and I often wondered if anyone would notice if I grabbed one to feed my family.

I keep an eye out around town for various things of use. Blackberry trees down the road, some bamboo, a few other plants here and there.
