So here's how my story goes.
I bought two Umnumzaans but they're unlike one another.

One's dated July 24, 2015 the other is dated October 9, 2012.

They both have the new pivot and are identical in size in blade, scales and everything.
The older of the two has been someone's "user" whilst the one made in 2015 is brand new.
There are some differences between the two and I am wondering if these differences are correct as I am not very familiar with these knives. (They're my first umnumzaans)
Here's a list of things I've noticed different between the two...
Color of the scales (I assume due to the usage the older one is darker)

Scale pattern is different between the two

Jimping is different between the two

Also one key difference that really made the hairs of my neck go up... since I know for a fact the blade is made of S35V I compared my newest Chris Reeve with my Quartermaster Tubbs

Then I did the same with the older one and I noticed that the steels were different in looks, doesn't have the same speckled like looks as the newer one and the quartermaster.

So after all said in done... is the older one an authentic Chris Reeve's Umnumzaan? Are there any other ways of verifying it's authenticity?
Any help and or feedback would be nice!

Let's ask in teh CHris Reeve forum. If you already did, then we'll merge the threads.

Wait so you're 100% both of the zaans I purchased are 100% authentic?

The only way to be 100% sure would be if you sent them both to me. BTW, I wouldn't turn that down. ;) :p :D

But they do both look good, and I'm somewhat known for having a CRK or 2 to compare them to.

But what about the differences I pointed out, jimping, and scale patterns. Did Chris Reeve changes these overtime? Also the S35V Why is it different in the older blade?

CRK is constantly making changes to improve their product. And the darker color may be something as easy to explain as the tumbling media being close to ready to be changed out, or simple handling.

They're both the real deal. There was a thread a couple weeks ago about the milling on lock side. From what I remember, CRK is now using a different stone wash medium compared to a few years ago.
You have a great example of how CRK makes subtle changes with the knives they produce.
So, no worries, congratulations on the umnumzaan's. They're good knives, enjoy the fruits of your labor.

CRK make little changes to things on their knives all the time so they are normal to see. The blade has a "tumbled" finish and this can look different depending on the size, age, type etc. of the medium used so will change slightly all the time. The same is true for bead/sand blasted parts, especially Ti. Even pieces of Ti cut from the same sheet stock can have a different hue after blasting. :)
