Hello all,

My brother is looking for a decent set of kitchen knives. there is a set in my book from Chicago Cutlery that he would like but I don't know a thing about their knives. It is a 14 piece set with wooden block.

If anyone knows anything about these knives please let me know. Thanks.

This may not be alot of help. I dont have any myself, but I know a few people who have them. Whether or not they just got them, or have had them for 20 years, they all have one thing in common, and that is they would never use anything else. They are extremely happy with them, so I would guess they are probably some good stuff.

UPDATED and REVISED

There's nothing wrong with Chicago Cutlery kitchen knives. With minimal care they can last a lifetime. I'd recommend hand-washing them because the wood handles can swell over time. If you get in the habit of using a steel, the edge holds up pretty good. And a block to store them in is a great idea so they don't get knocked around in a drawer.

I agree. I have a number of Chicago Cutlery knives and I like them. However, most of my knives were purchased before the company's knives were made "off-shore". I am not quite so crazy about the new "furrin" models' design, fit, and finish. If your brother really wants good kitchen knives for the money, I would recommend Old Hickory. Their fit and finish has really improved, in recent years, and their new walnut handles really make them look nice. Their 1095 steel blades are real cutters, too, though they usually benefit from a good sharpening right out of the box. Just take a little care to keep "the iron worms" away. And, if it matters, Old Hickory is still made in the U.S.A.!
