I'll look through some of my English links to see if I can find you something...

However, perhaps consider getting the book by Kapp and Yoshihara "Craft of the Japanese Sword." May be some help to you.
 
I remember seeing a "how-to" handle article on making a handle using a hammer handle also.

No idea on the url though

Here is the website that shows how to make one from a hammer handle. May not be very traditional, but looks like it works.

Wow, that's great! I had no idea it would be done so soon! I just heard that you'll be scaling Everest next week, so I figure I should have the sword in two weeks. Man, I thought it would take at least a year
