Mods, i realise this is wildly off topic, but this is the only place I know with true american patriots! Feel free to lock, move or remove this thread if necessary. I myself live in europe and have a couple of questions concerning the US military. On tv, the stars of shows often are, us army rangers, navy seals, green berets, marines, ... all are said to be the very best. Now i am not going to stir trouble by asking who is the best :p, but i'd like some insight as to what the difference between all these regiments is...

It is simply a hollywood creation, so that the same storyline may be produced 6 times dressed in different uniforms.

I was Army, so i can, and do, show favoritism like the above posters but this is more or less the top 10 elite units

10. USMC Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team
9. USAF Pararescuemen, PJ
8. US Army 75th Ranger Regiment
7. USMC Anglico
6. USMC MARSOC
5. US Army Intelligence Support Activity
4. USMC Force Reconnaissance
3. US Navy Seals
2. US Army Delta Force
1. US Navy DEVGRU, SEAL Team 6

Different training(though there is overlap), different roles(again, with some overlap), different branches of the armed forces. For example, the SEALs are part of the Navy, and their tasks include reconnaissance, counter-terrorism, foreign internal defense, unconventional warfare, anti-drug operations, hostage rescue, and personnel recovery. The Rangers are part of the Army, and deal with actual direct action, airfield seizure, reconnaissance, airborne & air assault operations, and personnel recovery. The Marines are just a branch of the Navy specialized in amphibious/ground assaults to support Naval campaigns-basically, they're like the Navy's version of the infantry.

As for "best", there's no specific best, just like there is no one specific knife that is "best". Basically, they are just all different groups of special forces-they have more advanced training and more stringent requirements to become a member than the "regular" Army, Navy, or Air Force. If you really want to know exactly what each unit specializes in, their history and origins, and get more details into their organization and training, just look them up on Wikipedia.

each trained for a specific task.
that means they all aim to be the best
in what they are assigned to do.
