US law for knifemaker, where to look?

Hi Dmitry - nice to see you here,

I think this is right place to ask - is it legal to make knives in Minnesota. I bet there are some knifmakers there and usually it is not a problem in US, but better ask it from first hands.

Dmitry asked me first by e-mail and I advise him to came to BladeForums. He made knives from his young ages while ago in Soviet Union and it was not legegal for certain types of knives. As I understand here in CA auto, balisongs and double edges knives are banned. But CA is special, Minnesota may have different, so

Is it any problem to make knives in Minnesota?

Thanks, Vassili.

Welcome to the forum Dmitry!

You can ask any questions here. Most if not all knife makers are nice and ready to help. Don't be afraid to be ridiculed or criticized by more advanced makers. Unlike Russian knife forums it's not common here to make fun of new makers.

I've been asking all kind of questions here including ones, that I am sure, might look stupid or ridiculous for an experienced maker. Never I had rude or impolite reply. I wish Russian forums where like that.

Good luck,
Alex

i believe autos ,switchblades are illegal in minnesota. everything else comes under the vague term of lethal weapon in the eyes of law enforcement and the courts. it the use of the weapon and not the form that gets you into trouble. minnesota is a hunting, fishing, trapping, farming state and most people have a multitude of use knives.example , double edged knife at a historical event would not be noticed as unusual unless you were threatening someone with it.

The forums very own Bernard Levine seems to have covered this for everyone. http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/sta-law.htm

Here too http://www.thebladeshop.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=17

and from Minnesota itself. City of Edina, Minnesota. (I presume it is state-wide?)

Hope that helps.

the city of Edina doesn't speak for the whole state of MN.it is mostly a community of uptight yuppies.

Thanks a lot people!
I found here some links at legal sites. Everything seems to set the rules for IMPROPER USE or being on a specific site with the knife.

I understood, that manufacturing of switch blades and butterflyes is illegal(almost every state). I have no intention or interest in theese types of knifes whatsoever. I am old style hunting-utility knife fan.
Thank everyone ones again.
I'll try to make something... 8))))
