Hi Smoke. I am guessing a commercial version of the usmc knife. It may take a little while for someone who knows for sure to chime in, but they will be around.

Can't offer a lot of info... the knife looks to be pretty old mfg. Also, the handle looks as if it has been "melted", either by heat or some form of corrosion...

my first guess is also that it's commercial....as far as i know issue "ka-bar" knives did not had any saw tooth, only the pilot knife...

hope someone knows from wich year it is...maybe how many were made....any info would be great!

all in all it's a very nice knife.
thank you!

the handle is a classic leather washer handle...standard manuf. precedure by ontario is to put a protective layer to prevent it from roting...

i guess it's early 90' made...but i'm not sure...

I'd be surprised if that sawback is factory. I've never seen one like that before and compared to the Ontario Pilots Knife, the teeth are backwards?

BTW, welcome to BF!

They seem to be factory made...i dont know if someone could made such good work...also the parkerizied finish was on the sawback,as i got the knife...if someone customized it, the finish should be gone....once i have seen one like this about 2 years ago on ebay...

It does seem too good for a basement mod, true. Maybe a prototype?

If no one here knows, I suggest you ask the Ontario folks directly, they have been responsive to my questions in the past.

I own the same knife and it is a factory Ontario sawback.
I bought mine in the early '90's (USCAV or SMKW) and bought one as a gift for a friend in around '96 or so (World of Weapons in Fla). The second knife was a dealers display as this knife was almost impossible to find again in '96.
Was looking to see if they were still in production today but only new ones I have found are sans sawback.
Love this knife, used hard and well traveled but still 100% by my side.

Hello Smoke,

Your knife was manufactured strictly for the commercial market. Ontario was trying to cash in on the Rambo craze when that style was popular.
They come up from time to time on the Bay but are not that rare. Still has a "cool" factor though.

Well you learn something new every day! Thanks for the info and welcome Der Koloss.

As far as I know the sawbacks were never issue. I bought two of them at the time (90's?) and I know I still have one around here someplace.

And here is the answer from OKC:
The knife in the picture is the 498 Sawback Marine Combat Knife. This knife was
manufactured by Ontario Knife Company and the Sawback Marine Combat Knife was
discontinued in 1996.

Thank you,
