Got a piece to clean up, and sharpen from a friend at church. It is a Rigid lockback, with a USA blade stamp, finger grooved grip, with a drop point blade. What is the story on these blades. The fit and finish is decent, no play in the blade and lockup is solid. He got the knife several years ago, and was wondering about its history, value, and reputation. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Rigid is a strange range of knives from el cheapos, to basic knives to their folder line. United Cutlery owns the brand.

The folders are currently contract-made by Canal Street Cultery, formed by a bunch of ex-Schrade guys. Those knives are a pretty good bargain, and are good blades, but I don't know how long they've been making the folders.

I knew they were now owned by United, but thought they were an independent brand originally, that is the time line I was looking for, when they were bought out if that is what happened. This knife is around 10 yrs. old I think.

My understanding is that the USA made Rigid knives were a separate company from who has the rights to the name today, and the early USA knives have a good reputation.
