Usage of the word vintage?

I’m new to knife collecting even as I approach antiqueism myself. My question is about how serious collectors use the term “vintage.” Is the common usage “at least 40 years old” as used by auction houses? It seems to me some sellers of knives on sites like ebay are pretty loose with their product descriptions.

You are correct that it should apply to an older product not readily available in its earlier form. Vintage micarta, Vintage tools, etc. 40 years to 75 years is the proper range. Older than that is antique.

However, I wouldn't put much stock into the use of "vintage" online. It is bandied about as a style as well as actual old things. Think of vintage clothing. A pair of new bell bottom jeans is marketed as vintage.

And of course you must be aware that the use of the word "vintage" in the same sentence as the word "bespoke" instantly waxes your mustache and causes black horn rimmed glasses to materialize on your face. It also makes your pants tight, and rolls the cuff. And it may grow you a neck beard.

Also, it may turn your Honda into a vespa.

You've been warned.

And it may jack the price up 4 or 5 times!!! Vintage Micarta goes for crazy amounts now!

Yup, most of my clothes are vintage. Heck, I probably have vintage uderwear. Nearly all my hand tools are vintage, too - some are antique.
