USB Issues

I'm using an old, beat up laptop that's on its last leg.

A year or so ago the USB port stopped working 100%. As it is now I can plug in a device and windows recognizes that a device is connected to the USB port, but it can't interact with it beyond telling me it's there. I can't view it in my computer or enter in the drive location in the address bar etc.

For example I just plugged in one of my MP3 players it it turned on and said it was connected. Windows brings an icon in the systray up that says USB device has malfunctioned and is not recognized. This happens with any sort of USB device.

To complicate things, like I siad this computer is on its last leg. It can't do windows update as far as I know. The system clock is out of synch and won't properly synch itself up through windows, and this has prevented me from using windows updates and installing certain software.

In all reality this system should be punted off a really tall building, but if I could get the USB port to work for now I could upload pictures at my house again, which would make updating my site much easier.

Pop your OS disk and at the command line type sfc /scannow

+1

here is a link explaining what's going to happen when you run this command. you really don't need to OS disk in to run this command but if it finds a file that needs to be replaced, you'll need the OS disk with the clean copy of the file. It is easier to put the OS disk in from the start as baldtaco-II suggested.

Forgot to mention the CD drive is shot

Regardless I'll run the scan without it and see if it finds anything. Thanks.

EDIT: It found things right away, but without a working cd drive....

did it prompt you for a windows cd?

Yes.

I tried mounting the image of my XP disc to a virtual drive with Daemon Tools and the scan doesn't seem to be recognizing it.

EDIT: Problem solved. Got one of those PCMIA? port to USB adapters. I can finally upload knife photos to my website without driving to a friends house.

Question; I have 2 disks that will re-image my XP machine. Can I use those disks to run that check or do I need a gen-u-ine Winderz disk to do that with?
