I found out my wifes getting me an old fashioned strait razor and strop for Christmas. She got me the 4 sided strop on 1sks.com with 4 different grits of leather. How does one go about using a strait razor properly for shaveing ones face and head. How do u properly strop/sharpen them to keep them it top condition? And finaly, can you use regular shaving cream or is there a specific brand/type i should get? Thanks for any help you all can give.

I don't have the URL's on me right now, do a search in all of the forums, you will find a lot of references to places on the WWW with razor info. A google search will turn a couple up also.

I've been using a DOVO for a year now, and love it. It's really a very specialized animal, and a lot of knife sharpening techniques don't apply. Don't EVER put abrasives on a strop. They might be fine for a knife (pun intended), but they are FAR too coarse for a straight razor. There is a paste like auto wax that you can use, that's all.

Good luck, hope you enjoy it!

Man, you guys must be pretty brave for using a strait razor. I KNOW that I'd end-up cutting parts of my face and neck off if I used anything other than an electric razor!

(But for some reason, my REKAT Sifu doesn't scare me.:D.).

Shaving with a straight razor is not that bad, just remember to take it slow:D !!! I hope she got you a round tip version, the square tips are notorious for cutting ears:( . I've used both shaving soap, and regular cream, and found it does'nt make much of a difference IHMO. As for sharpening, etc... see if you can find an old barber, and ask him about that, their usually more than happy to help:). Becareful, as establishing a new saving edge can be tricky, and becareful with therazor it's self, as they are quite delicate  .

HTH:)!!!

I believe she got me a Dozer roud tip one from 1sks.com along with a really nice strop. I useually get my head shaved with a strait razor at the local barber shop before work on Monday, Wednsday, and Friday and this guy can get my head and face smooth as it was when I was born. Never thought to ask him and I see him 3 times a week. >>>BRAIN FART<<<

Tips on shaving with a straight razor.

Never get in a hurry.

Never shave in the buff and always wear shoes. If it slips out of your hand you could nick something!

I use the white stones from my 204 to keep mine sharp.

Hope this helps.

It's all in the way you hold them. They teach barbers how to use them on balloons. As on how to strop them properly, ask your barber to show you, they have to lay almost level with the strop and be drawn away from the edge. Try the balloon trick, I use a S/R and thats how I learned and I still have ears.
