Use foot power to weld?

Stu, I think you are on to something! Not only the tonage, but the foot press would take up less precious bench room than the presses I have seen. And,the hands free use.

The foot press concept is very simple. It is basically a long arm lever that you push put with your foot. There is one pivot point and a curved section that slips as it applies the force. The expense of the commercial kick presses is based on the constant alignment for each stroke. The purpose was to mate the upper and lower sections of a die, etc.

For out forging need, the alignment may be as coarse as one stroke of our hammer blow to the next. A rod coming down loosly between 2 eye-bolts would be good 'nuff.

A hybrid of wood and steel is feaseable. 2 layers of 3/4 plywood as the foot part, etc. Its sorta like using the end of an ordinary swinging door to press with. You would not want to get your hand caught there.

So let's see what some designers can come up with.
