Use for lemons

Just got a brass handled saber, and it had a little discoloration on the hilt. I took half a lemon, and cleaned it. I was suprised how well it worked. I also think it helped with the smell on my hands from the brass. Anyone else do this? I read that in indonesia, they use limes to clean blades with, so that gave me the idea.

I don't think I'd try cleaning the blade with a lime or lemon but I'll let the experts jump in here.

Surprise surprise I also use lemons for cleaning stubborn rust. I wouldnt recommend it for all blades since it can etch blades, but for most of my stuff its great. Really helpful when restoring a really rusty Moro Sword.

Like Fred saids with regard to etching.

How does the end result compare to say brasso. Does the lemon cause the bolster to tanish?

Brasso leaves a bright shine, the lemon leaves a slight tarnish that I like.

While I haven't tried lime or lemon for cleaning brass, IMO, they can create a nice patina on the blade. Here's my 12" Sirupati to illustrate...
