Use it -- or not?

I've got a Dick Patton "dressed up Field Unit" I bought because I liked the way it looked. No particular use in mind for it.

ATS-34. Paid around $300 for it.

It has basically sat in my knife chest since '00 or '01.

I've been thinking it would make an awfully nice "camping" (not camp) knife.

I was all set to bring it with me, when my wife (who has a shoe fetish similar to my knife problem) made the following analogy...

"See these white tennis shoes I'm wearing? They'd work fine for camping, but I'd tear them up. That's why I have hiking boots..."

Sort of made sense to me, so the Patton sits. I carry an Entrek Companion instead.

What do you think? I hate to "abuse" such a nice knife, but I also hate to have such a nice knife and not use it.

this maybe just me... but i would ebay it, get the $300 back and buy more knives as users.

you know; ones that you will not feel so bad about using in a "camping" enviorment.

thanks,

Entirely up to you.
If it had a thinner grind, then I'd take it, (it appears to be, but I can't tell 100%)
because it's better for food prep and other more realistic cutting chores
around your camp site.
.
Also it appears fairly easy to maintain and keep in good shape,
and even if you can't do it, you could always send it to someone to get it cleaned up.

I have the same kind of problem, i love my knives, but i buy them cause i want to use them and so i cant bring myself to buy a knife worth hundreds of dollars because i dont know if i would use it. To my 20 year old student self 300 bucks is a lot. So i dont know what you should do, just thought i would share

This is a highly personal decision. Do you take pleasure in the fact of owning it, keeping it pristine, etc.? If so, then it is not being wasted by just sitting. If you take no such pleasure, and are uncomfortable using it, then sell it. This is one of those deals where no one else's opinion matters but yours (and maybe the wife's).

Miss that D2 TTKK.

At the time, my thinking was that I actually take a nice chefs knife & paring knife camping (in the "kitchen stuff" box). And I didn't really want the same knife for "misc" that I use for food prep.

I was also hung up on D2 as "semi-stainless" -- I thought I needed S30V.

Michael, that is a really nice looking knife. If it was mine, it would be used quite often, even when camping. Would be careful with it of course, but I would still use it and show it the love it deserves. Looks to me like the knife would be pretty good dressing game or in the kitchen or as a general camp knife.

Mannnn, I like the Patton and the Dozer too. Both would get used by me. Those bad boys were ment to be used. :D

The "problem" with the Entrek is that it's 1/4", bead-blasted 440C.

So it's HEAVY, and not great edge geometry and doesn't "wipe clean" very easily.

But it cost it a lot less. The sheath is low-end Kydex / polymer -- not great, but it works. And it's a left-hand, drop-sheath, which I prefer.

It's not "great" -- but it works. Not really happy with it, but not unhappy ENOUGH with it replace it.

Also thinking if I just start USING the Patton, maybe I'd quit lusting after the Dozier.

Does anyone remember that Dick Patton (Boise, Idaho) made the knife that figured in the movie "Last of the Dogmen" with Tom Berranger?

Yours looks similar.

All you gotta do is realize the ....fact.... that everything falls into place when you remove one zero. To net a cost back to 1960 or so, just take off one zero and presto....pretty darn close.

So....go ahead and USE your $30 knife. That's only about twice what a Buck 110 cost in 1960's.

$300,000 house = $30,000
$25,000 car = $2,500
Minimum wage $5.15 bucks.......ooops......the bastards forgot that, didn't they?

And we continue our blithe march to obscurity and national failure.

I'll be doggoned.

Yeah, same guy. I've still never seen the movie.

Who sez you have to abuse it to use it?
Bring it, enjoy it and use the knife properly and you won't look back.
Go ahead, cut your steak. Whittle a hot dog stick and a fuzz stick or 3. You won't hurt it.

Promote responsible knife use and say no to knife abuse.
:D

Mike, you need to see it! The knife has more presence in this movie than Jimmy Lile's hollow handled knife did in "First Blood"! Go rent it, or give me your address and I'll send you my DVD! Good story, a little bit cowboy and Indians, little bit mystery, a little cops and robbers, tiny bit of "love", and some great scenery.

I've been trying to sort of "define" what I really need a camping knife for.

I have a Camillus 154CM combo-edge Talon and an 8" Chicago Cutlery chefs-knife in my kitchen box.

I'd say 90% or more has something to do with wood -- either sharpening a stick, or pruning the limbs off to make a "poking stick" for the fire or cutting off small branches around the tent(s) and major paths (so people don't get poked in the eye in the dark).

A little bit of rope-cutting. Some opening of packaged food if the Talon isn't handy.

I just tend to feel more comfortable in the woods with a knife on my belt.
