I recently ordered a Buck 110 drop point with 5160 steel and BOS heat treat. a great knife. yet I noticed the blade has a 078 on it, indicating it is one of a series. I bought it to use, yet wonder if I should store this numbered one and order another for use?

up to you. i know the things my grandfathers gave me when they passed that i treausre where the things they used daily and around me
tools, etc.

one example.........my one granfather left me his gold multiple decades of service factory working hamilton thinomatic watch. real nice with his name engraved and all that. he never wore it around me. i also have his daily wearing watch an accutron 218 beat and worn badly. i treasure that one far more. cause it was always on his wrist. i still wear it to this day. sum up....... the things i got that they didnt use around me or at all...dont mean near as much to me as i have no memories attached to those. course no kids or heirs doesnt matter much either way.

if you plan on selling and recouping at some point unused with original boxes and such bring much better money, there is always that. these dealer exclusives are hard to predict on value down the road though as there is so many versions made. which ones will be desirable more than factory ones etc. anyones guess?

one of the fellows on this site always said safe queens are great for your wifes next husband when we are gone. ;) im paraphrasing of course.

JB said it pretty well. Collectors value drops at the first cut. Value to your kid won't change much with use. I expect these will be eventually made in large numbers but only the first 100 will have a serial number. They are cheap enough to buy 2 but not valuable enough to worry about using it for it's true intended purpose. Copper and Clad has some great values.

Numbered or not, there's nothing exotic about the knife so use it up!

that is the truth, LOL

I have to remind myself occasionally that I'll buy a $30K vehicle and drive the heck out of it for years - but want to preserve a Hundred Dollar Knife - sometimes I make no sense at all! OH

Hunter, you have too much common sense stored up in that head of yours.
Delta, that knife was a good value as Desoto said. I purchased a similar 110 five years ago, gave more for it and enjoy carrying and using it every time I do so. My kids
aren't going to get Nothing of mine in new condition. Me leaving them the knowledge of hard work means more to me. DM

Worked with a guy that rented a car every time he took a trip because he didn't want to wear out his new car.....

I went thru this myself when I first started collecting. I was holding a nice club Buck trying to decide to give it some gentle carry and my wife asked me who was I saving it for?
