Does anyone here use your go everywhere strop, the palm of your hand?

Woodcarvers do it all the time but I've never seen it in the knife community. I've had a couple of people chuckle at me when I've stropped my knife on my palm to maintain an edge until you show them it works.

Makes sense as the palm of your hand is just untanned leather and if your are working you will have some unseen grit particles on there too.

You'll never reprofile an edge this way but it is enough to bring an almost shaving edge to a hair popper.

Never used my palm, but I've used my jeans on numerous occasions. I figure my palm is too soft, and would roll over the edge too much. I can pull the leg of my jeans tight against my thigh, or even better, my shin, and strop on that. The inner side of your shin bone is pretty flat, which makes for a good stable surface. I grab my jeans behind my calf, and pull it tight, then strop along my shin.

I avoid running my knives across my flesh.

You've never tested an edge by scraping your finger pad across it? When sharpening it, do you not feel for a burr with your finger? Never tested your edge by shaving a patch of arm hair? Ever? Nothing dangerous about stropping on your palm. You're pulling the knife away from the cutting edge, not into it. That being said, if you still worry that you could somehow manage to cut yourself, you probably shouldn't do it anyway.

Just for S 'n G, I gave it a try with my BM Rift. I can't say I really noticed any improvement in the edge. It would shave hair with pressure, but is nowhere near hair popping sharp. I gave it a good 20 strokes on each side across my palm. 32 stitches later, it's still pretty much the same. ;)

j/k about the stitches of course... No blood drawn.

Not saying that at all, of course I'll check an edge for a burr. I just don't see any application where my palm of my hand would be the only thing I have to strop on. If I'm wearing pants, demin would be better, if I'm wearing shoes, leather would be better, if I'm wearing a leather belt, that would be better. If I am out actually using my knife in the field I'm not going to risk a cut, if I am at home, there are many better routes to take.

Interesting concept, if you like it, go for it. Not for me though.
