Looking at one for $50. Is this a bad idea? Can anything go wrong with these after a few years?

That's a pretty good price. Assuming that the dewar is still under vacuum and the lid is in decent shape, that's probably not a bad buy. If it's been damaged to the point that it has lost vacuum, then it's not going to hold LN for very long.
 
You’d have to fill it up and measure your evaporation rate.

That’s assuming there’s not already some obvious damage to the tank like cracks or dents that may have compromised the vacuum.
 
Put it under water and see if there's any bubbles. No bubbles means that the seams are good, or that the interior is already filled with something.
 
The Dewer has a two inch opening. Does this seem adequate? Is this a typical size for an opening on these things?
