Used my pacific salt as a weapon today

I caught a stud Barracuda today and when I got him to the kayak and gaffed him I realized I didn't have a bat to knock him out with. Barracudas are usually really hot when you first land them and they are real toothy so you don't just want to flop a live one in the kayak! Well, I used the only thing I had...my pacific salt. I just gripped it like an ice pick and popped him twice through the top of the head and several times through the eye. A bat is a much safer way to deal with a hot fish but the pacific salt seemed to pacify him sufficiently. :-). The same knife helped clean him when I got in. Here he is modeling with the knife.

Ooooh, barracuda!

Sorry, couldn't resist. ;)

That's a hefty fish though... Can't blame you for wanting to subdue it as fast as possible. Glad to hear the Salt was up to the task... I'm starting to get a little concerned with all these stories of "my knife let me do THIS!", as I keep thinking to myself "Oh, that'd be a nice knife to have... Oooh, I like this... Oh and that one too...". I guess this is how some of these collections get so big...

At least he didn't take it away and use it on you...;)
Glad it worked out, and nice to see a knife get used.

So after stabbing yourself in the head with your Pac Salt, you decided it should be good enough for the Cuda. :D
Great story!

It means your forehead is stronger than barracuda's !!! :) lol

Thanks for that...I was just taking a sip of scotch when I read that and that sent it right back out my nose. The stinging I can deal with, but it's a waste of perfectly good scotch lol.

Anyhow...great pictures by the way. That's a big fish!

Nice fish! That thing's huge! I still can't believe you fish up that large of fish on a kayak.

I'm always super jealous of your posts gringo. All mine got to do yesterday was scramble the brains of an invasive crab.

Where I'm from, Florida Keys, that fish would be full of Ciguatera. I've been down to Costa Pac coast about 10 times, Mostly Quepos area. Is there no live reef on your side to get the toxin into the food chain?

Yeah, you guys have that stuff bad! The Bahamas too I hear! You can be a LOT more cavalier about what you eat here. I have never heard of a single ciguatera case here. We eat pretty much everything with no issue. Our big grouper and AJ's are fine too. No worms or disease.

Thanx for sharing, Lance.

sal

Thank you for the knife Sal. I use it every single day. It gets a ton of use and sharpening so I am getting a spare and I'm going to send y'all this one next year to regrind the serrations for me. You'll know when it gets there. You will smell it before you see it.

Bad-effing-ass!
