I finally used the RC 4 for my intended use... deer hunting. It worked great. I had used it to split some wood a while back and then this weekend cleaned and skinned 2 deer. It worked great. My fellow hunters/skinners were all asking to use the knife. I thought it might be a little wide of blade for some of the reeming work but it worked great. I love the hunter orange color, and the sheath that is so easily washed. It still is very sharp and I easily touched it up with some lansky stones. Just a note to those wondering about its deer hunting virtues.. It's a very nice hunting knife.

I just used my RAT-3 for deer season. I was pleased with the way it worked. I am eying the Blaze orange RC-3 as the upgrade, but I'm a bit short on funds right now. I'm curious, I had a bit of fat stick to the RATs coating while dressing and skinning. How was the coating on the RC-4? I understand it is different then that used on the RATs. Maybe someone else can weigh in here. I did go ahead and order this sheath for my RAT. When I do get my RC-3 it will have a home.:)

I just don't care for plastic.

It worked great for gutting and skinning and scraping and working skin off the skulls around antlers. It cut the heads off, legs off.... it worked great. I wiped it in the snow, then wacked it on a tree to get the snow off and jammed it in the sheath attached to my fanny pack. When I got home I quickly washed it in the sink with soap and water and a scrub brush, ran the sheath under the faucet, shook them and done. (I didn't notice a "deer fat" problem and one deer was fairly frozen by the time I got to skinning it. It has a very nice handle to hold on to when working. No hand cramping.

Appreciate the posts, guys, and glad the RC-4 is working well on the huntin' trail.

Would love some pics of the RC-4 skinning deer.

Isn't that an RC3 in the photo? RAT 3's do not have a glass breaker on the pommel. Mike

Yes it is a RC-3 in that particular pic. I have ordered just the sheath itself. I did ask before I purchased if a RAT-3 would fit and was assured it would. I just couldn't afford the whole package right now, so I had to compromise:D

Try knivesshipfree.com, they usually have those sheaths in stock.

That is exactly where I ordered it from. It's only been a few days, but I'm eagerly waiting:thumbup:

edit: did not mean to hijack this thread. Just wanted to compare the RATs and RCs when it comes to skinning and processing game. I'm just really pumped about my new sheath:)

Skinned and butchered some bears this past summer and the RC-4 performed superbly. I dropped my Helle skinner for most of the work in fact. Other than a Kershaw Scallion, it is all I bring hunting with me now!
