Used the RC-6

I had intended to do a more complete review today, but I got sidetracked. Heading down my overgrown trail I tried the RC-6 as a machete, slashing vines and palmettos on the trail. It doesn't work as well as a machete, but it slashes well enough for a 6.5" blade.

The ditch that drains a swamp across the road is backed up. We have had rain nearly every day for over a month.

So I went on down the trail looking for dams in the ditch to clear. I cleared out several and used the RC to chop some woody brush out of the ditch.

Sometimes when your up to your butt draining the swamp, it's easy to forget you're doing a knife review. So back out to my chopping area.

I was making some funky fuzz sticks when it started thundering. I needed to touch up the edge with my ceramic stick, but left it at the house. I know it can do better with a fresh edge. But with rain on the way, I went for the palm fibers. This stuff is great. Just pull it apart and you have instant tender.

To be continued.

Ok, back to real knife stuff. I split some maple I had that isn't too wet to make some smaller sticks for kindling. I chopped some smaller limbs with the RC. It can do light chopping fairly well. I think the RC-5 might chop a bit better.

I used my official BiC survival lighter and got things going while I prepared more wood.

Darn, gotta go. Daughter is stranded. Anyway, the knife works fine.

OK, daughter rescued. Back to the RC-6. It is a light fast handling knife with good balance. I was able to touch up the edge to shaving sharp with just a few light strokes with a ceramic rod. Love this steel. I think the RC-5 may chop just a bit better due to the weight, but neither are really choppers. The RC-6 is more nimble and works for slashing limber brush and palmettos better, but I like a lot more reach for that chore. Nothing out machetes a machete.

Summary: the RC-6 is a good all-around field knife. It may not be the best at anything, but it can do it all. I am confident that I could use this knife to skin animals, make traps, and do just about anything one does with a knife. The larger handle fits my hand better than the RC-4, and the knife carries just fine. So if you're looking for something a bit bigger than the RC-4, but not heavy like the RC-5, the RC-6 is a good choice.

Good review!

No palm trees for tinder in my next of the woods - Pacific Northwest.

Yeah, but you have stuff up there that works as well, I'm sure. Every area has its unique materials for fire starting. I'm still working on my fuzz sticks, but with palm fibers, fat lighter, and pine cones, I can usually get something going. Anyway, my ugly fuzz sticks are not the RC-6's fault. It's a good knife.

Boy Horn Dog, you have some beautiful ground to explore. I've seen pictures of your property over in the Yard. It's beautiful.

P.S. How about posting that picture of youself in your horn hat???

Hat? That's my William Holden Memorial Drinking Helmet. Never drink without a helmet. Safety first, I say.
