Saw the Mantis Mrs. Smith and wonder if such a small blade would still be of some defensive use? I agree that it'd be better than having no other option, but is it any good? Or is it a very fancy box opener?
 
Picture yourself in a defense situation....would you rather cause profuse bleeding as opposed to the possibility of facing charges for man slaughter?? I would rather cut the crap outta them with a small knife and run like hell! Unless you're a well trained individual stay away from using a knife for defense.

Using a knife successfully requires training.

Using a knife does not require training. (Although, judging by some of the owie pics that get posted here, it couldn't hurt.)

Using a knife successfully for self defense requires training.

not really. plenty of people with no training at all have successfully defended themselves and others with knives.

constantly spreading myths that they require some kind of special training or knowledge is most detrimental. sure, having training may take you to completely different levels, but taking a knife out of your pocket and jabbing it into someone else doesnt really require any specialized training or skills. all it requires is willingness to use it.
