Useful stuff to bring along

I was inspired by the EDC discussion at the fall gathering. I made a couple modifications to what I usually have in my bag or pocket. I didn't change the items I bring, just the form they take. I always have some duct tape along but I have never thought to wrap it around a card. I also have carried a flashlight in the past but I now carry a better and cheaper version.

Also in the video is a public service announcement about not getting all blow'd up trying to fry a turkey. See if you can spot the Becker in the video.

Nice job yet again. Really enjoy your videos, thanks for posting.

I'm famous! Woot! Glad you like that light. MajorMountaineer and BPrepared304 gave me a bunch of guff over my "giant" flashlight during one of our scout campouts (A Fenix PD30, so not that big) but the Major was kind enough to snag me one so I could be cool too. Has been infinitely more pocketable than the Fenix, and just enough light to do the job.

The Steamlight is just about the perfect size for my little utility kit. I don't find myself needing a huge powerful light often enough to bother carrying the weight and bulk. For wilderness/outdoors use, I still prefer the Fenix LD-20. I have the little red lamp cover for it and the headband. If it ever breaks I guess I'll have to find something similar.

I agree, for heavier use a larger flashlight is definitely nicer, but for around camp, or the house, or office, that little streamlight is a fantastic thing to have along. Did you look at the cordage Ethan had there in his shop? If not, you should check it out. Wallace Cordage Tarred Braided Nylon Decoy Line, size 36 (I think that is the smaller version) and it measure about 1mm x 2mm, doesn't have the memory that bank line has, and the tar is more like wax and doesn't come off all over your fingers or other stuff you carry. While it isn't 350lbs test, it is rated up to 150 and a couple strands of that would easily manage most stuff. Plus it stores really, really nicely since it wraps flat.

If you want I can send you some to try out. (I have both the size 36 and 18.)

They make a smaller roll that is far more carry-able. One inch wide, and about the same size as a roll of electrical tape.

I saw the Becker (Starts at 13:06), and as always great job on the video. I'm glad you didn't get all blow'd up too. :)

Glad your likin the Hornet Kyle! Its a real compliment to see my stuff in your lineup! Love the videos! Go easy on poor Nelly! Lol! Send her to my house if she gets to much to handle! I got two little kids that would love to have her!

You need your own tv show called average guy survival. Looks like all the good stuff on discover is gone so we need you to step up. :)

Great video with some useful tips, and the turkey looked delicious.

I like the room key/gorilla tape tip.

None of those ideas are mine except the needle safe, but I'm sure someone else has done that one as well. All I've done is package everything up nice and neat. The kit really is pretty handy though.

I put needles in a cut down pen in October of 2010 according to my posts over in EDCForums. I think it is one of those things that just makes sense, so you see a pen and think "Hey, this would work for this" once you get to this "preparedness" mindset. I can almost guarantee someone else did it before me though. "Ain't nothin new under the sun" as someone once said.

Looks like I also did my gorilla tape around the card back then too, although I do mine a little differently than you guys.

I wrap a piece of the tape sticky side out around a card that acts as a spool of thread (or small cord) and then start wrapping the tape around that so it can be removed and give access to the thread.

Yeah the first time I did it was in 1992 for a trip to the Boundary waters, but I'm pretty sure it had been done MANY times even before then. Like I said, I didn't invent anything. I just put it all together in a nice little package for myself. You definitely gave me the idea for the smaller flashlight. I had one from Target that was like a 40 dollar light. It was small but the Streamlight is smaller and less than half the cost. Also my Target light doesn't have the clip etc.

Like I said, I think it is one of those things where you look at it and go "Hey, this will work for X". God knows I do that on all kinds of stuff. If I was a gambling man, I would bet you even have a box somewhere full of random sized containers. God knows I do.

(And like a bajillion stainless steel containers. Stupid $200 wood gas stove....)

I think this is still OT but which model streamlight is that and what size batteries. I'm a bit of a flashlight junkie and love my four7's but that wouldn't hurt so bad if you lost it.

Streamlight Microstream, takes a single AAA. Costs around $20 if I remember correctly.
