Well, I've been scouting/trolling for a while to pick up a user 317. Finally picked one up for a very good price that is in nearly mint condition......except some yahoo with a grinder or file has really buggered up the blade edge. I assume this vintage takes around a 40 degree edge, but I want to know for sure before taking it to the sharpmaker diamond stone. Eventually it will go to the spa, but it couldnt cut the cheese right now and I want it usable until it visits Post Falls.

Handsome 317's. For that era a 18-20* edge angle would be close. Are you going to carry it and use it? Enjoy, those two knives. DM

Oh man! I think I'm gonna be sick.... Why would someone do that...? At least it's in good hands now.:) Nice save. That's a good using knife right there.

Its not as bad as it looks-the blade is dull, dull, dull, but I think from normal use. Looks like those scars are from a brief sharpening attempt, and the person quickly realized he didnt know what he was doing. Once buffed at the spa and factory edge put on, it will be great. The liners, bolster and derlin are in beautiful condition.

I have no doubt the fine folks at Buck will fix up your 317 to fine standards. Those guys are great! I have been wanting a 317 for a long time. I have Schrades Old Timer version, so same thing without the black tuxedo :) I hate to see a blade abused when a little patience and a stone is all you need and leave the grinders alone.
