I have a pretty nice Khukuri and would like to make sure I am using it properly. Grip (My handle kinda jabs my third fingert pretty good while in use.) When to use the tip vs the belly etc? Does anyone have a well ilustrated sort of guide for using this versitile knife? As always if you own you sure as hell better know how to use it properly or you or someone else is gonna get hurt.

Think of it as a manualy operated chainsaw.

One that DOESN'T have a kill switch.

That SHOULD scare you. If it doesn't, think of this. Gurkhas can cut through 3 to 4 inch thick branches ( probably softwood ) with a single cut. Now can you imagine a full power cut - delivered sloppily - bouncing off the target and cutting into or maybe through your leg?

Don't believe it? Look up other websites ( not this one ) where a water buffalo calf is decaptitated with a single blow as an offering to the Hindu gods. A puny leg is going to stop something that can cut off a small buffalo's head?

As Dirty Harry Callahan said, " A man's got to know his limits! ". :D :D :D

Its a fun and informative place. Your questions have found the right folks.

I'll second Not2Sharp's suggestion of the safety thread. That covers the do's, donts, etc. Some of the picture links are broken, sorry.

There is a section in the safety thread that covers "controlled safe cutting principles" that some lovely forumite contributed---------------------------;)

Good note on using the safety thread. It might be kinda nice to have a video of the Nepalese just using khukuris for the daily chores. Dr. Duvon knows how to use one but that may be a little intimidating for the newcomer. Puja too! Like all knives and swords there are limits to what you can do or possibly destroy if your not careful. Be careful. But have fun too!
