Uses for crappy tacticool tomahawk

Im not an axe guy. I’m not sure I’ve used an axe since my Boy Scout days. Maybe once or twice since then when the chainsaw quit working. I don’t have much experience with them.

Well the other day I was digging around in one of my toolboxes looking for something and I came across a sog tomahawk. Think stereotypical “tactical” black with a spike on the back etc.. I guess at some point I decided I should buy a crappy tomahawk. Not sure when, not sure why. I had no idea how long it had been in that toolbox.

My question for you guys is what can I do with the damn thing? It doesn’t look like it would split wood very well. I don’t have any plans on taking up axe throwing. What legitimate uses are there for this tool?

Tomahawk throwing practice? Emergency door key? Road rage notification signal? Keep it on the passenger side of the truck, so when someone parks too close to the drivers side you can make some room and not scratch your own door😁!

I have one of those Sog hawks in my truck I bought just because it was mispriced. I’ve got some nicer ones that I use pretty regularly, but the Sog is just an emergency beater-but it may not be a bad camp tool. My ATC model 1 mows through wood like no tomorrow, so the SOG shouldn’t be too bad. Maybe I’ll pull it out this week and see!

I second the idea of throwing it at a target. If you enjoy the throwing, get a H&B hawk out of Ohio, inexpensive and they are decent quality for throwing. I do have a couple low end hawks here and they hanging off nails in my garage. So that’s another idea for the SOG. Park it and forgetaboutit.

I could see myself using a spare bargain bin tactical spike hawk as a gardening tool, could be useful for stubborn weeds or small saplings, digging small holes, cutting landscape fabric, etc. Might be a good kindling splitter by the fireplace. If you bring it camping, maybe the spike could be used as a pot hook for a cast iron Dutch oven that's been sitting in hot coals. Also thirding the throwing suggestion, that's always good fun!

I like them for trunk tools, but if it's like current SOG ones, I'm not sure I would even use it for that. I have a cold steel war hawk and the steel is decent and it actually chops well. I've used it for some demo work but tested it chopping wood before I used it for anything. Sucks for splitting but taking out small limbs and things to move branches from roads or trails is reasonable work for it. Breaking up ice is another use for the spike. Using it to lever something from the ground or when trying to break something free is another use (like a pick axe).

I consider it a semi-disposable tool and have no hesitation about treating it poorly.

And of course, throwing is something that could be done with it. Most of the current SOG tomahawks I've seen are aimed towards throwing so the steel is pretty soft, which is why I won't own one since I don't axe throw.

Sometimes, it's just nice to have tools you don't care much about to treat badly when you've already gone through some of the "better" ways to deal with something already. A little percussive maintenance or destruction is a nice place for such tools. I just dug out a fiskars chopping axe, which is a decent axe actually, but it's about 8 down on the list now as I've significantly upgraded, so it's got root chopping duty today where hitting some stones or getting swung into the dirt won't cause me grief.

I originally bought it for demo work so it was put into bad shape pretty quickly as we dealt with an emergency on a fallen structure with trapped animals inside, and that's what Walmart had in stock that day.

And, sometimes it's just time to throw things away, or give it away if someone wants it.

I appreciate the ideas. I’m thinking I’ll put a decent edge on it and stash it in the duramax as a general beater tool.

Unfortunately I don’t think throwing is in the cards for me right now. I don’t have a yard as we’re still living in an apartment at the moment. And I don’t think setting up a target with some boards in the living room would go over too well with the wife. Or the neighbors.
