USFS R6 FIRE, any idea?

I’m sure it is a kelly, Collins, Mann... something to that affect. And I’m sure it is of good quality also. Sorry not much knowledge of it myself.

R6 is Region 6, no doubt put on by one of the fire cache there. Almost any major american company has produced axes to FSS specs one time or another

In small amounts it isn't necessary to buy from any contracted place either. I can go use my purchase card at a hardware store, buy a truper, stamp all the info I want on there and it is a legitimate USFS axe.

So there is literally no company it couldn't be.

M muleman77 In the sense of probability, what percentage would you put on it that it is worthwhile to hang and use? 20%? 90%? I know it's pretty fuzzy, but what do you think?

Very high percentage it's worth hanging and using. TT made a lot of them. All the FSS ones were good, whoever made em. I don't see any but user stamps on yours there though.

Low % of guessing what brand without some additional pics ;)

Yeah, I guess unfortunately for me there are no maker's marks anywhere on it. Here is the back side, with a steel splatter mark =P

I guess I will put an edge on one of the bits and smash it into a maple log by hand and see how the edge holds up. Seems like the only way I can think of to tell if it's worth my while to hang.

!st axe: I believe I see some ridges inside the eye, so my guess would be: Kelly
2nd axe: This mark looks pretty big, so I am not sure. Plumb used similar symbols on some of their axes. Go to bottom of the page for more info http://www.yesteryearstools.com/Yesteryears Tools/Plumb Co..html

I also see those ridges in the most recent pic. That's a good sign. Most likely a TT. If not a good axe at any rate.

I'd use it, if I was you.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your help. I'm going to make myself two double bit axes and I think the USFS one is on the list. I'm going to make another thread asking for opinions on the other one. I have three options, two different era Craftsman's and a Collins.

The mark at the front of the eye is a test mark to make sure the eye is tempered soft and not hard like the bit. A hardened eye would crack easier.
