I have been reading a lot about the versatility of the GI poncho liners. I have been thinking of getting one for a hammock under quilt and for whatever else I can think of to do with it.

Do you all recommend these, or is there a better option (without spending a fortune)?

My wife tried to take mine that I have had since serving in the early 90s she got one as a gift. Next thing I know I am looking for mine again and found it with one of my kids. Years later I found my mother trying to "borrow" mine. At this point my wife and I both have one, my 3 youngest kids have one each, and my Mom just got one for Christmas.

They are very versatile and do a good job for the price/weight ratio. You can get better but I am certain it will cost you.

I have only used mine in the hammock with temps in the 50s so that is not much of a test for hammocks.

The single best thing the Army ever issued me. Period. I've been sleeping under them for almost 30 years. I've worn out a few. Had a girlfriend tell me she didn't like camo on the bed. Told her it had been with me longer than anyone I've lived with. Still have the liner. Slept in below 0 (farenheit) with just a liner and a bag; no problem. Used to cut them up and have them sewn into issue wet weather gear; very nice; dry and warm. Better than fleece; lighter and warmer, dries faster too. They are a little stiff when new, but when broke-in they're great.

Well, I shall soon see for myself, as I ordered one from that famous auction site for a low price. I mostly want it for my Hennessy, but it seems like a versatile bit of kit for other things too. I should sniff around for a poncho to go with it...

I used a US wool blanket, with a slit for my neck
So wore the blanket as a liner to the poncho
Wrapped up and slept in it

Which is a long way of saying I used a blanket instead of the poncho liner
