I'm wondering, when using a vertical belt sander to thin a blade or sharpen, is it best to hold the knife horizontaly with the blade up or blade down for best results. Or, it doesn't make a difference?

The edge should be facing into the rotation of the belt. So if the belt is running toward the floor from the ceiling on the side you are grinding, the edge of the knife should be facing the ceiling.

cheap , and very under powered for knifemaking...

I prefer my Bader.

Doesn't it depend if you're V or convex sharpening?

That's really unsafe (the blade can easily catch the belt, throwing the belt or the blade). It's impossible to get a burr using that method as well.

I laid my 1x30 belt sander on its back with the belt running away from me...

This thread should be moved to Tinkering/Maintenance/Embellishment...
