Using a BK-14/BK-24

Yesterday, I was out in my yard cutting some finger sized limbs off some big oak limbs I cut down a week or so ago. I have to honestly say that USING the BK-24 was down right painful without handles. I don't like paracord wrapped handles, so I will be searching for better handles for both the BK-14 and BK-24. Any good cost effective suggestions other than the factory orange or black?

Have you all had similar experiences with the skeletonized handles in terms of using them for tasks that require much force?

Question #2: I have read that the factory edge angle is both 15 and 20 degrees on the BK-14. Which is it. The sticky says "15". Is the BK-24 in D-2 ground to the same edge angle?

All my small knives either are wrapped or have the zytel. I don't have any issues with it. I believe the knife is at "20°" It's finished off by hand so it isn't exactly 20°.

My 11/14/24 knives all have scales. The 11 has the micarta scales and the others have zytel. If you don't want the factory zytel scales (which are really comfortable by the way), than there are several members on here who make scales. I've seen pictures of them by Tommythewho, 710 custom sheaths, and some others (a guy called birchwood makes some but they seem pretty elusive). The Knife Connection has some but they're pricey, probably the priciest of all of these options.

I had my 11 wrapped for a while, and it was very comfortable.

Maybe try some cohesive bandage and tennis racket wrap, it will soften the grip a bit.

Thank you. I am going to buy a set of the factory zytel scales and see how they feel. If I like them, I'm going to put what I would consider nicer handles on the BK-24. I really like this knife. I never really used a knife with the skeletonized handles before other than for low pressure cutting chores like opening mail or something akin to that. So, this was a revelation to me. For me, both knives are nearly useless for my needs without hand protection. The tennis racket or bicycle handle bar tape idea is a good one by the way which is really inexpensive but I thought something a bit fatter might be more comfortable when USING these knives.

So, the edge angle is approximately 20 degrees versus the 15 mentioned in the sticky for the BK-14? I shortened up the sharpening angle a bit and the BK-24 sharpened right up to a pleasing sharpeness. I'm thinking it is probably about 15 degrees based on that. But I am no expert. There really isn't that much difference visually between 15 or 20 degrees when sharpening by hand on a diamond stone.

I just ordered the forest green G-10 ones. I like the orange too.

Got the green scales and mounted them on the BK-24. I like them and definitely an improvement for my practial USING. Think I'm going to buy a set of the factory zytel's for the BK-14 and give them a try also.

NikkiR, you might find this surprising, but with my 3000 posts, I have never posted a picture here or any other forum (mostly firearm related). I need to change that.
