I am a new member of the Buck collectors club and a new knife collector in general...Just went to my first show, Alanta, and had a really wonderfull time! The Buck folks I was privleged to meet were all really cool.... I really feel that Buck is a special company. I am glad to be a part of the family. When I wanted to have the latest club knife converted to a auto as a user the comment came up " Dont use a real collectable Buck! "" My thought behind this was having a really special carry peice, sort of like hotrodding a real 69 Hemi Cuda....Rather than restoring it to factory spects....I have a really nice custom 110 that Dave Scrimshawed for Me, I am afraid to carry it !!!!! So what is everyones thoughts on actualy using one of of the " SPECIAL COLLECTOR " Bucks ?????? < I aint skeered> but am I the only one ?

I have a highly collectible knife that I scavenged off of ebay. Would I use one that is potentially worth a couple hundred more than I gave for it? Not Hardly. There are just too many out there for users. Collectibles are getting more scarce. You just joined the "Collectors" club. Welcome to the addiction!!

hummm as in a old movie..
Pay No Attention to the man behind the curtten...
for he is not the great and powerfull OZ..

Hiya Decaf!
I thought I was the only one to quote that line but I am finding more and more people of like mind seeing through the 'smoke and mirrors' and reciting such a suitable line!
Now to the knife use: bucksway, how much did you pay for your vehicle(s)? If you are like me you have to drive it in calcium chloride in the winter (road salt). Ever see some one enjoying a Holland and Holland shotgun? To liken our Bucks to fine firearms of yesteryear, how many of those ivory gripped and engraved Colts are mint? Some, to be sure but the ones with the real character were used, not abused, but used. Pride in ownership my good fellow, pride in ownership! No explanation necessary if YOU know what I mean.

I say.......USE THEM!!!!

Use them HARD!!

That's what they're made for!!!

(Besides, the more of them get wrecked, the more mine are worth.)

:D

I use all my knives.

My "collector" knives, to be honest, only get light use. I don't take them to work. :D

Welcome, bucksway!

I have specific knives that are collectable only and I leave them be. Personally, I would never use a scrimshaw piece. I prefer to buy a seperate 'user', even if it is identical to a collected item and yes, I am 'retentive'. ;)

I am a retired college instructor... and cannot afford 'collectors'. Mine are users - that just so happen, at least to me, to be 'lookers', too!

I had several friends tell me shooting my beautifully blued S&W Heritage 24 was sacrilege. I agreed... and swapped it for a nice SS revolver I could shoot and easily clean... problem solved.

I have a 110 auto that has FG, nickle silver, regular wood handles.

PM or email me and I'll give you a name.

As you have seen, collectables are very subjective. I guess for me, finding an old knife that is in near excellent condition, makes it a collectable for me. I have the series 1 Klinkhammer 100's and those are highly collectable. But I bought two each of the 110/112 BCCI knives couple years ago so one could be a collectable and one could be a user.

The 4 or 5 auto's from a couple years ago are investment knives. Others I have picked up here and there can be a combination of collectable, investor, or user. Would I use an unused 106 micarta hatchet, certainly not. Or an NRA 119 where there were only 100 made and CJ stood there and signed them for me, and I grabbed three. Would I use one? Again, No.

Now the three 805 Signature Series fixed blades in S30V, that I managed to accumulate, yes, I may use one of those, since there are 1,000 of them and since that particular knive is one of the few premium steel fixed blades with the tip and length that I like. in that style fixed blade. (Buck is missing out on not making that one a production model)

So,,,I still will agree to disagree on whether to use a collectable or not. I just ask myself, is there some similar non collectable I can use instead.

So thats my story and I reserve the right to change my mind as this old age crapola kicks in..:D:D

I do what I can Jim!
Folks- I just got my new EDC 110 (Sambar pins N/S BG-42 monogrammed) this morning and at the Post Office today a young lady asked me to help her cut some box tape. Sure thing as the brand new Custom 110 was pressed into service. Not being a student of Political Correctness, I had that tape reduced to a mere shred of itself in an instant. I have knives that stay under-glass but I have knives that are just that- for cuttin' stuff. Pride in ownership! Thanks Pete and Richard and Chuck and CJ and Joe and.....

Pride in ownership.....YEP...It will be my first custom Ive bought and paid fore ...I just want to have it closeby I PROMISE TO TRY and KEEP IT NICE!!!!!!!!!!! Do you need that cut? YEP I got a knife on me.......

I found a way NOT to use my custom Damascus 110 when it ever gets here... I sinned - ordered a Kershaw Damascus Leek - ~$82 with s/h - should be here today or Tuesday. It has an 'Alabama' connection... they used carbon steel 'Alabama Damascus' blades - I guess from Bear up in Jacksonville, AL. They are supposed to be the largest Dam maker in the states. I bought my now-only Dam-bladed knife - a Bear 14" Bowie - from SMKW some years back - $100 - such a deal! I wonder how many 110 blades THAT blade would make...

Anyway, I think I'll carry a basic 110 as an EDC knife - for use. I am really Jonesing for my custom 110's...

Welcome to the forum Bucksway! :)
I struggled with the same question. I collect the pre 1961 hand made Buck knives and have taken them on huning trips before. They never made it into the field though, I just could not do it.
Recently I got an old 1940's vintage Buck knife that had no handle. I rehandled it in modern lucite and had no problem carrying it into the woods on my elk hunt. I guess I found a loop hole! :D
