I like making these torches when camping etc as they are quite easy and fun to make.
I decided to make one today just using my PSK Knife that Mark made me.

First task is to split your torch stick about 6" of the way down...

Then split it the opposite way....

Now it's just a case of filling the slots with some fatwood I split earlier and a little pitch I found. It should look something like this...

Here is a video of me lighting it. You will see I struggled as my ferro-rod is very worn down. What I should have done was light a piece of fatwood on the floor and then use it to light the torch, or better still use one of the matches that was in my kit !!!!
Once lit these torches burn very bright and for quite a while, they can also be used to light even the most stubborn camp fire !

For a tiny blade it's amazing how well these things cut !

I've done this a few times, although I didn't have as much fatwood, I intertwined fatwood into it to help keep it going though. Great post :thumbup:

Neato. I've seen this done with resin and wtigs before, but it's way more impressive with fatwood! Nice pics, too.

Worn down you say, it looks to be a spanking new one before you started :D :D :D

Great vid !!:thumbup::thumbup:

Quick question.. Any dripping going on with pitch as it burned ?? Just curious ...

Good stuff pitdog. I think I'd find it easier lighting a piece on the ground and using it as a match, but it was neat for you to demonstrate lighting it that way. I couldn't help but wonder how you would explain the torch to a ranger walking buy when it was fully lit :D Thats the kind of thing that always happens to me....
