If you have a 1750 rpm motor and use a 1 1/2" diameter drive wheel to run the belt, how many feet per minute will the belt run?
I'm thinking about using the old baldor motor that came off my Wilton to build the lap sander I wanna make and I figured with a small drive wheel it should slow the belt down nicely. Whatcha think??

Believe my Grizzly with the 8" is 3450fpm. WHen I put on Rob's wheel,t hat's uct in half, and getting down to slow speeds, but still 1725 fpm(going from 8" to 4" drive wheel).

SO no, that wouldn't be fast at all. :)

WHat ya really need though is someone wqith an adjustable with a known range of speeds to chime in and give an opinion on it(And someone like Rob who definitely knows the Math to chime in and say if my numbers are right)

I have one that runs at 850 SFM and I find that very slow, especially on stock removal...great for finishing and fine work however. My main grinder is 5000 SFM.

I'm building this for deburring and finish sanding the flats on my knife parts George, so slow makes sense. Was thinking about a disc but it's a pib to change grits plus the paper doesn't last as long as a 2 by 72 belt. Guess I'll give it a try. Can always go with a dc motor if I have to. Thanks guys!
