I am a real noob. I am embarrassed to say I just got really into knives a couple months ago. There is so much to learn and so many knives I would like to have if they were cheaper, much, much cheaper. I have an Off Grid Hawkeye, White River knucklehead 2, and a 698 Foray. Because of the recurve on 2 of my knives I need a way of sharpening them. I already have a DMT Dia-Fold Magna Guide Kit (I can still return to amazon). I know a lot of people have negative views on this kit. I have used it on a couple of very cheap knives and so far so good. I research stuff ad nauseam when it comes to spending and in trying to come up with a cheaper option I came up with this idea of taping/rubber banding a Spyderco Tri-Angle sharpening stone onto the magnetic little square that holds the magnet that holds the DMT dia-fold sharpeners. The weight of a dia-fold is 2.4oz and the weight of an ultra fine tri-angle rod is 0.8oz. (Thought wt. would be a problem). I haven't checked the wt. of the fine and coarse rods. I liked the tri-angle rods that can also be used for serrated edges. Thanks in advance for any help.

You can also just hold the rod in your hand. Some videos on YouTube that will show you how it’s done.

Use the DMT diamonds for the initial reprofiling/sharpening. The Spyderco is a fine stone and will keep blades honed and sharp.

Thanks for your response. I wanted to use the dmt magna guide to make sure I have the correct angle. Through the years I have practiced on stone with cheap knives. I have gotten a few knives razor sharp but less times than not (probably would have done better but I didnt know about honing). Because I am not consistant by no means yet, I didn't want to try freehand when my new knives need sharpening. I am still practicing on my cheap knives.

How is your general experience with the DMT Dia-Fold Magna Guide Kit for straight blades? I don't know witch to buy between this and a Lansky system.

Oddly enough, one of my favorite jury rigged systems was using my old DMT Diafolds with a separately obtained Magna Guide attachment and a Lanksy type angle guide from a GATCO Kit that John Anthon had gifted me many years ago.

Doesn't solve your problem of choosing one, but worked very well. If I had to choose, I'd go with the DMT option.
