Are there do's and don'ts regarding using a 12" sword in the woods to clear hunting stands? I'll have an O Tanto (Warrior series) with me this weekend when my hunting partner and I clear shooting lanes in some new hunting stands. I haven't used a sword before and am open to any suggestions regarding using one. We will be hacking through 3" trees and smaller, and lots of brush.

Regarding blade care, what type of edge should I put on my O Tanto, and what should I coat the blade with?

Any hints are appreciated, thanks!

The sword manufacturers that I have dealt with do not recommend using their products on trees or brush. It would be best to bring an axe and a machete to clear your shooting lanes.

Swords should not be used against grounded targets. branches can be cut etc but once its got roots it has no give so one bad cut can mess your blade up big time. Use an axe or machete on grounded stuff. Brush should be ok as long as what your cutting is hanging freely.

Swords tend to be too light for heavy cutting. A solid impact can snap the blade. If you really want something that would eat up 3" branches, then go with a khukuri.

That is a job for a machete, axe, bolo, or khukri, not a sword. Since you only have a couple days, I'd suggest a machete or axe.

Thanks guys for the insight. I watched my hunting partner a few weeks ago use a sword to go through trees, branches and the like. It was light to carry and excellent for reaching branches that can make the difference between a full freezer and disappointment. I will limit the tree felling and stick to objects not "rooted to the ground" (excellent suggestion - thanks!!).
