I've used an ultrasonic cleaner on some really beat up knives, being careful not to put in any that might be damaged. I've had some great results getting some stuff off of them and keeping them looking good, they work really good at getting in all the groves and small areas. I've used it on some newer ones as well that have had some stuff that soap and water couldn't get off. I'm working with an older 390 benchmade with a scratched up satin/plain blade and was wondering if using a tumbler would work out some of the scratches and if it will would it do any damage to the blade or the handle(titanium)? It's a brass vibrating tumbler and does wonders on parts and brass. I'm a little hesitant with knives for multiple reasons to include them vibrating up on the side and digging in. Has anyone else used these tools and if so what results have you gotten? What kind of media/formulas do you use?
I'm using a 2:1 water to vinegar mix with a splash of dish soap on the ultrasonic and it's done wonders, but you have to get the knife dried off quickly. I've only messed up one knife, and not sure I did, it was an old camp king and it broke a bottom spring, but it may have been broken, and even glued before the ultrasonic. I've probably put 30 knives in there. Works really good at cleaning without taking off the patina of an old knife. I don't put any celluloid knives in there and I'm careful of any that might stain. Worked really well with a knife that was all gummed up and didn't want to open and I didn't want to soak in WD-40 I was afraid it would have ruined the scales. I'm really considering just putting some of my broken/parts knives in the tumbler to see what it does.
Any input on this is greatly appreciated.
