I got a good deal on 1" x 42" belts that don't have an X weight backing. I know that they are better for sharpening since they have a stiff back and will not curl on the sides as easy. I needed to come up with a way to use the 24 belts I received and did not want to toss them aside just for other types of work. By adding an adjustable back plate to the grinder, I found that working under this plate, the belt does not deform and is actually stiffer then the X weight. By adjusting the plate up or down I can increase/decrease the stiffness on the belt in the area to be sharpened. Maybe this has been done before but I have not seen it. I hope others find this method usefull.

Nice, I do the same thing!

You can also double up belts.I ran out of some 400 x belts,so I put a 400jflex over an old x and it worked fine.

Great tip. Never thought of doing that. This is a great place to share information.
Thanks
