I am looking for bar stock to make guards, pommels, etc.

The thickest I can find nickel/silver it in is 3/8" X 3/4" X 12".

I am looking for something about 3/4" X 3/4" X 12" to make a one piece guard for a hidden tang knife, I am working on.

I know I can buy pre-made guards http://www.knifemaking.com/category-s/444.htm but the thickness is 3/8" tops that I can find in a pre-made! Does any one have a source for 3/4" x 3/4"?

I have thought about going to stainless steel but that is as much or more expensive than nickel silver. Check out these prices http://www1.mscdirect.com/eCommerce...77dz3?refinement=4291261036&searchandizedOk=Y and I am not sure which stainless would be the best for guard material 303, 304, or 316. The prices are as much or more than nickel silver.

Anyone have suggestions on nickel silver or an alternative material for guards, pommels, etc. that can be obtained in thicker quantities such as (3/4" x 3/4") and that doesn't break the budget?

Thanks!

What kind of SS was it 303, 304, 316, or something else?

If you don't want to say I understand but about how much did it run you?

416 - it's harder than the others, but finishes out beautifully, and matches the CPM 154 that I primarily use for blades very well once finished. Can't remember exactly how much the entire bar was - I bought it with some other steel. IIRC it was in the $120 range, but there's enough there for about 30 guards (if not more)...
