I’ve been fooling with steel. Seeing where it leads me. Trying to perfect adding bronze and copper to my steel in a forging process. Purely for decorative purposes of course. Adding new ways to etch the steel afterwards. Seeing what steel works well, if Damascus works etc. Having some good luck with 1084.

Wanted to share some of my experiments. It keeps me busy and excited about the new day and what it will bring. I’ve also been discussing various steps in heat treatment and how the methods vary and why, with other knife makers. Some aspects of heat treatment effect what I can do with copper and brass, and how to go about it.

I

have 24 blades numbered with meticulous notes on various changes in methods. I will put them all through tests to see if I see any difference in how much they can flex , hold an edge, and in general hold up. Ed Fowler has been a big help (since I torch harden the edge, and Ed has perfected this). Tony Metsala, a good Damascus worker has helped me out with ideas, steel, and methods. Mark from Leading Edge fabrication who does water jet cutting and works steel has offered ideas. Alfonso from Baron Steel in New Jersey has worked with me. We’ve all discussed marketing, blade requirements, prices, techniques, testing methods and such. Not as easy to do before the days of the internet. Like how all of us can so easily show each other what we are up to – share that with so many others and see what others are up to. I hope you enjoy the changes the internet has brought as much as I do, and are, like me, learning and sharing.

I have a new section on my web site I’m working on, devoted to just my custom knife’s – past knives I have made as a gallery for ideas.
