Using DMT EC on Edge Pro Apex?

Hey folks, I'm looking at setting up an Edge Pro Kit and trying to establish my needs. Right now I'm using a Sharpmaker. I have a full rod set from the diamond rod to the EF ceramic. I also have a 2x6 DMT EC/F stone that I often lean against the Sharpmaker stones to re-profile my knives to 15* per side before putting a secondary 20* bevel on. I'm generally happy with the sharpness I get working through the stones, but only the DMT works well for the re-profiling harder steels and rubber banding it to the Sharpmaker can get sloppy.
So, the main goal is to be able to reprofile knives quickly and question is, will the 2X6 Diasharp plate fit in the Apex rod guides or will I need something else to adapt it this stone to the edge pro?
Since I'm otherwise happy with the Sharpmaker results, am I barking up the wrong tree looking at the Apex?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Sure 2x6 will fit EP slot. For a more secure fit, use a file to notch both ends of the stone.

EP is great but kind of expensive device for reprofiling. Really you just need some sort of clamp to hold the 2x6 75degrees (=15 degrees off vertical), no need to rubber band to the SM.

Yes, the 2x6 Diasharp works just fine, you can actually get it already mounted on a blank for use on the EP from Jende. Or, you can make your own blank, which is a very easy thing to do, just need a file, a piece of hardware-store 1x1/8" aluminum, a hack saw, and about five minutes. One three-foot strip of the aluminum will make you easily five blanks.

That's how I did it when I mounted mine. :)

Yes, they're an extremely simple piece. Once you have one to look at, you won't have any questions about it.

Any regular miter saw with any carbide tipped blade will easily cut a perfect 45* angle on 1/8" thick aluminum in a few seconds. I'd be surprised if you don't know someone with one, but every carpenter has one.

IMHO, it's best to use 2" wide x 1/8" thick aluminum to mount the 2x6" DMT plates to. That way you can use the DMTs like there isn't a backing on them. It's a little more difficult to use a 2x6 DMT with a 1" wide aluminum backing, as normal, but they do work fine in the EP either way.

It's easiest to use aerosol contact cement to put them together.

ps- An EP is a great sharpener in it's own right, not just for profiling. The Sharpmaker does well with maintaining your edges.

I used the 2" version for mine, with 3m Super-77 as the adhesive. A pair of 1" blanks side-by-side would work as well, I suppose. I just suggested 1" because that's "stock".

Yes, I think that would work fine, and it's probably easier to find it 1" wide.

You can "true" the ends with a file once they are in place.

+1 on the 3m- 77.

I've used my EP and 120 grit Moldmaster to cut the 45° bevel on aluminum blanks.

I originally bought a couple of extra blanks from Ben Dale when I bought my EdgePro, just for that purpose. And to mount leather on for strops. No one was selling those back then. Then somebody here made me about a dozen or more blanks, in both 1" and 2" widths. I took different, large stones to a local lapidary shop and had them cut to fit the blanks. It gave me a good assortment of stones to use on different steels when needed. 4-5 years ago there were several threads here, with some guys having 20-40 different stones that they mounted for their EdgePros.

I bought an 8' piece of 1x1/8" aluminum, and I don't think I have any of it left.

Sure do like leather, balsa or birch, with all my different compounds.
