Using knife....

Just out of curiousness, does anyone here actually use their S1 SOG Bowie? I bought one, but don't like to own knives I don't use. Would I be better off keeping it as a collectible, or should I just carry it and use it? It is a knife, after all......

The S1 was the first SOG I bought and have used it a lot. Hiking, hunting, cutting vegetables, chopping, on the dining table, letter opener, and very expensive pry bar. Used it to skin the pig I shot a few years ago. A great knife: takes a great edge and holds it, good feel in the hand. All function, form, and fit. Mr. SOG really got it right with the S1.

Definitely carry it and use it.

Cheers,

Carl

Carl (NPG) knows all about using SOG's, even the expencive ones. I too vote for using it!

Well, I took it into the kitchen Saturday, and carved up about 6 lbs of fajita meat. My usual knife for this is the Becker Magnum Camp knife, an older Blackjack with the convex edge. It is my favorite kitchen knife. The SOG didn't win this, but did a quite respectable job. And the bluing colored nicely, as well. I've read that the leather handle washers are epoxy treated, how well do they hold up over long-term use? Does the handle loosen up over time? Anything else I should watch for or expect? And what about having it reblued, anyone tried that?

ah yes, the SOG as Tactical Tableware (years ago someone here at SOG Forum invented that term). Many are the pounds of meat sliced with my S1 .... and never once did I slice a finger in the process.

S1 bluing And Cantaloupes and Honeydew Melons do NOT go together. I once used my S1 to cut a large pile of these and by the time I was done, the bluing was pretty much gone !! There's gotta be something very acidic in cantaloupe and HD melon juice. So beware.
-- Never worried about a re-blue.

Never had the handle loosen up yet.

The leather washers. After the epoxy wore off, I now occasionally soak the washers in Neatsfoot Oil. As for longevity, I've got a couple of WWII-era leather-handled Kabars, and those handles are very dry but fine. I reckon the S1 leather handles will do just fine.
There has been a discussion or two on the Forum about that topic, here is a "recent" one:
