I have some ideas for promo knife vids I'd like to post on youtube and elsewhere. I'm thinking about using appropriate songs for backing tracks. I know most people just use whatever song they dang well please, with no thought to who actually OWNS that song, but that's not how I want to do business. I will not use other people's intellectual property without permission and/or paying them for their work. You can quote me on that!

Can anyone point me in the right direction, as to how to do this LEGALLY and pay the necessary licensing fees or royalties? Thank you for your input :)

I'd use an attorney to broker that, or there might be a third party that handles simple use transactions, an i tunes for you tube videos?? Good luck, and i commend you on doing it the right way. Greg

Youtube is interesting in that lots of videos are being taken down or muted for copyright.

I also see others that have a disclamer "I don't own this music"

There may be fair use provisions for short excerpts.

"using an attorney to broker that"
You just stepped into tens or hundreds of thousands of $

Unless you had specific songs in mind, local musician playing his own song, or OLD songs with no protection.

Or no music at all.
Maybe I like your knife but hate your music & fancy video editing,
for example any Snody video I've seen.

Haha... I used Smashing Pumpkins' Aeroplane Flies High for a knife video, and YouTube pulled it. I'm fine with that. I made it more for myself than anything, and I wasn't using it to make money (not taking any orders anyway). You could always write and record your own music, which I've done a bit of, but the microphone on my computer isn't quite up to snuff for what I'd like, and studio time is money.

You might want to read through the following:

A good option might be to purchase some "production music" for your purposes so as to avoid the racket that is the mainstream music industry. I applaud you for wanting to do it the right way. I'm not of the mind that you're hurting the artist in using their work. They get paid squat for such uses anyway. It's the music publishing companies that are always screaming to get paid. And I have very little sympathy for them. Ever since Sony went and silently put a rootkit string of software into a CD that I legally purchased and ripped to my computer so I could put it on my ipod, I've sayed, "screw 'em" to recording companies. That little piece of software which was not overtly advertised locked up a very expensive computer and cost me plenty of my time in re-formatting the drive all for the sake of trying to sell Sony mp3 players.

Find an unsigned local band you like. Maybe they will let you use their music. You have music in your vid, they get free advertising.

Nathan's idea ab out production music is a good one. I used it when I was making educational slide shows and video tapes.

Thank you all for your input! I have certain recognizable kick-ass songs in mind that mean a lot to me, and would support my knifemaking philosophy; I will NOT use them unless I can do it legitimately.

I will refrain from mentioning other makers who steal music and film clips for their own knife promo's, and I will ask you all to do the same.

"Stock" music... thanks, but no thanks.

RE: finding local bands and/or producing my own soundtracks... that is simply not viable. You can bet your ranch that I CAN do that; but my office manager ran the numbers, and well... we agreed that it's more productive for me to spend my time making knives, not soundtracks.

I'm interested in licensing existing songs. I do not have time to play music agent.

Many of the good unsigned bands already have demo CDs and often are more than happy to let you use there music for little or no money if they think it will get them some needed attention. Now I know you have a particular song in mind so the unsigned band option doesn't really work, I was just pointing out the low production cost. I had worked out a deal with a local band in Winnipeg to use their music to promote on of my races, all I had to do was buy their CD and give them a venue to play at the race. I also was going to feed them too, but I couldn't get the necessary permits for a stage:( They still came out and played an acoustic set at no cost to me:thumbup:

Howdy James You married to your office manager too, like me? I traded for a great song. I now own that song. Works great. Contact who you're interested in. Most bands are on Facebook Twitter and all those other deals. Offer a trade for limited usage. You'd be surprised at the responmse. Even though I don't sell kitchen knives I have found them to be great trading items. Even non knife folks got to eat.

For what it's worth, I agree that mixing music into the videos can dissuade viewers as much as it can attract them. What strikes you as "kick ass" music, will almost certainly strike some portion of your viewers as annoying noise. I know I cringe every time I start up a video with a strong sound track. People's tastes in music are very personal. Are you SURE you want to impose your musical taste on those viewing your knives? Are you sure you want to drive away potential customers? Remember, knife customers come in all ages and types. They aren't all like you, even if they like your knives.

Just a thought.

While there are a lot of songs I like, there are probably more who don't like them.
When I go to a website that plays their favorite music, I almost always hit the back arrow.
At the very least I mute the sound.

agreed...

good luck James.. post a link when you get something up...

I click that little button that says "audio swap" and then another that says "feeling lucky?" and it just randomly picks crap until I okay it. My sister saw one of them and said, "You don't listen to techno, why did you use that song?!?!?!?"

"Um, because youtube picked it, it's legal, and it covered up me breathing into the camera's microphone." :)
