Using Sharpmaker on Strider SMF

Hi All,

I just bought a Strider SMF from another member that should be arriving later this week. The member I bought it from said that the edge was not very sharp from the factory. So my question is should I re profile the blade? If not how would I sharpen it on the sharpmaker seeing as the smf's angle is 22.5 degrees. Would I still hold the knife straight up and down while using the sharpmaker or should I cant the knife outward a few degrees? Also if I did hold the knife straight up and down wouldn't this create a secondary bevel? On the other hand I have the funds to buy an edge pro apex so I could just re profile the smf that way. Thanks for the help guys.

You will want to cant the blade in the opposite direction of the Sharpmaker rod to adjust for the slight difference. If you are more of a beginner at sharpening, the EP will help tremendously in improving your sharpening skills.

In my opinion, putting on a thinner bevel would be desirable even in an SMF. My SNG I thinned out a bit, but kept it thick enough to handle abuse. Even axes are sharpened around 40 inclusive--and this is a pocket knife.
