Please tell me everything you know about using stones to finish knives. Techniques, equipment, and especially where to get stones would be much appreciated!

I haven't ever tried using stones to finish a Blade out.But I do know that a friend of mine has and he gets different grit stones from the auto parts store.
Check out on Foggs site, that is how he finishes his knives.

Thanks Bruce!

I have tried it once on a "medium" waterstone, just to see what would happen. I really liked working the metal over the stone, and it did a good job, as far as I remember.

I'll check out Don Fogg's site pronto!

heheh, I have this info from a well trusted knifemaker that uses stones for most of the work on his blades... He uses diemakers stones, soaked in kerosene... I think 400 to 1200 grit, then finishes it off with swipe of 1200 grit paper to even it all out.

Crayola,

Check out Gesswein. I've used the Moldmaker Plus stones. If you don't care for the smell of kerosene in your shop like me, I recommend a solution of water and baking soda.
