Using the pommel for glass breaking

Hi,

I was wondering if someone had tried to break glass with the pommels on their Rat's.

Is it possible to break glass with the non sharpened rounded pommel too?

I'm asking this because I'm doubting between a RAT Pack knife which has a rounded pommel and the RC-3 Mil, which has the sharpened pommel.

Greetings,
Dirk

I dont own any unfortunately, but seeing how both are made out of steel, if you hit glass hard enough it should break at one point...but that's my assumption. I do know few people that punched through car glass with nothing but their fist...not advisable and pretty dumb, but the glass did brake:)

If you've never had to break through glass in your life, does it really matter?

Even tempted glass isn't particularly difficult to break. If the need arises, just about anything can do the trick. All my RAT's have exposed metal at the rear, and I'm sure they'd bust glass.

i busted out the window of an old car i was shooting at the other day with the pommel of my rc-4,just for shits and giggles.it worked just fine.

We had a U.S. Marshall friend a few years ago try out the sharpened pommel to break a car window out. He thought it would take a little force to do it and nearly fell into the car when the knife punched right through with very little effort. Car glass will break suprisingly easy if a little force is brought to bear quickly in a small area. The rounded pommel should do it but I have not tried it. Somebody out there own a junk yard and can try this and let us know? :)

car glass breaks at around 100 PSI.

warning: incoming drunk math.

PSI = pounds per square inch. thus, if the impacting area is less than an inch, less actual force is needed.

the RC5 is 1/4 inch thick. if it had a FLAT square on the back end of it, and you placed it on a car window, and placed a 25 pound weight on it...PLACED, not hit, it would shatter the window.

Consider then that the pommel is actually sharpened, and the RC 3 is angled, and you're talking in the order of a very small contact surface area, one I do not feel like calculating. I'd wager that a light tap with the RC5 would bust a window, nearly under it's own weight on a sunroof. the RC3, and even the 6 and 4, un sharpened or angled, have all about the same surface area on the back end. I'm going to guess it takes about 3-5 pound of applied force to shatter car glass with these knives.

I've got to admit, I've personally never even thought about whether any of my knifes could break glass or not-it's never even been a concern for me!

Well, firefighters use spring loaded center punches to break car glass. Even the spring loaded ones put out less force than you're likely to apply to the pommel of a knife, so it's no real surprise that it works.

The Marshals and LEO guys tell us it is handy to extract folks who lock themselves in a vehicle thinking they have thwarted the officer for a bit:)

LOL. I used to work for six flags. People would leave their dogs in their cars very often. Phish concerts were notorious for it. Anyways. had a young rottie in a car the first time I dealt with this. Had all the windows up on about an 80 degree day. obvious heat issues with the dog. When I got there, we had about 3 medics, a few security guys, and a couple of state troopers standing around. Took my radio off, hit the back window, and said "opps". Prolly done it to 10 or 15 cars. I see the RATS as very well suited to the task, any of them. The exposed metal at the rear is perfect.

BTW: when you take a near dead rottie, and give it medical care (a human nose mask fits perfect) you revive it...and then you suddenly realize you have an angry dog on your hands... it's kinda something you dont think about at the time.

Wouldn't the point of the knife be just as effective and potentially safer?
Pointy pommel is great for prying stuff!!

Interesting experiences. The reviving the dog bit is definitely something that'd slip my mind if I were in the same situation. You have an alive and angry dog and then a owner with a broken window....which they desired since they nearly killed their dog. Least of their worries.

Sweet. Not sure how any of that made sense to them, sometimes being a moron comes naturally. I mean hell, I'm a prime example. :D

Get the rounded one. If it doesn't break the glass, turn the knife around and stab it.
