Has anyone heard what the final story was behind the Marines' new bayonet project? Saw the Ontario version over at Knifecenter and wondered if that was the version going out to the troops....................

I have YET to see one of the new bayonets. Of course we grunts are the LAST to get anything that is issued.
It goes to the reservists and Service Support guys first
Never did understand that one...

The new bayonet is also on the back cover of the new Brigade Quartermasters catalog. Finally a utility knife style bayonet.

Thanks for the replies y'all! Krizzard, those are some good links and interesting reading. Looks like the Marines have picked a good one.

Crowinghorse, I too have often wondered why the supply system falls down sometimes. Anything at all that could increase a line Infantryman's chance of survival when the times get tough SHOULD be the A #1 priority on everyone's list. Odd how the ones actually doing the fighting get the back of the line sometimes. SK

I just saw a bunch of these and they are badass! It's a much more agressive bayonet than the M9 model, and feels really good in the hand.

mudflap, crowinghorse, I find it interesting you should attribute the lack of a good bayonet to the supply system. Having worked in "Combat Developments" (materiel acquisition) I can tell you to look to your own infantry school for the reason. The infantry school establishes the need, approves the design, does the testing, signs the approval, and established the fielding plan for any weapon system. The supply system only executes that plan. Just because our motto is "Keep the best and issue the rest" doesn't mean we are always responsible for you not having what you want, just what the military wants you to have.

BTW, that is a greatly improved bayonet over the M9. I've never liked the M9 and preferred to carry the M7 and a good field knife.
