USMC Ka-Bar

---UPDATE---

I did some more searching around, and found out.

It said "Hi-carbon USSI 1095 steel hardened and tempered to resist breaking under severe pressure and to accept and retain a super sharp edge"

Does anybody know how good this stuff it?

KaBar or Camillus USMC is plai old 1095 carbon steel. Works all day long as long as you do your part to keep it reasonably well maintained, clean it up after you use it and the blade has been made about four million times, it does the job fine.

a little wd40 or whatever oil you have handy on the blade will maintain the edge and keep it from rusting too bad, and if you use veggie oil it will be okay to use on food even when oiled.

Try not to get the leather sheath all oily or the integrity of the sheath (ability to hold its shape) will be compromised over time.

That steel has worked since the dawn of time more or less, enjoy using it.

Okay, I'll edit: It is very impact resistant (means you can stab logs, break concrete blocks and perform other nasty hard impact stuff with it) and the edge you can put on thse is close to surgical.

Do not use a power sharpener. Use a nice clamped system like a Gatco or Lansky with a diamond hone and the edge will be able to "bite" more efficiently, rather than a smooth edge which tends in my experience to be more brittle.
