What's up with the Kabar USMC knife I just received in the mail? Is the butt as plastic as it sounds and feels? If so, can this thing take any punishment when pounding? If it is plastic, I must say that I'm a little disapointed.

Here is a link of the knife put to a test by this website. *Note* this is not the best test for knives but I will post the link b/c it does shows him hammering on that butt cap (keep in mind this knife did not score very good over all based on their review). http://www.knifetests.com/page6.html

All i've ever seen have been metal, but i haven't seen any lately. ahgar

Ditto, its metal dude that or you got a knock off, ive got both a standard issue USMC knife and the Midnight fighter(kb1271) both have metal buttcaps

Thanks for the input. My knife and it's box look just like the one on the above link. Note to self: never buy a knife before checking it out here.

Maybe the powder coated epoxy makes it feel like plastic. All mine have been metal. Steel, I think.

Horn Dog, do any of yours look like the one in the link above (including the box)?

^^^ could be that. I just bought one and it's metal.

On a side note, does anyone know if it's a solid metal disk that thick, or just a stamped metal cap? I emailed kabar, but they never bothered to answer.

I broke the butt cap off my ka-bar a few years ago trying to baton wood. Mind you, I was using a hammer to hit the butt cap so I consider it my own fault and not the knife.

Lesson learned. Use another piece of wood as a baton to split wood instead of hitting metal on metal.

Although I noticed that the broken piece looked like that cold pressed powdered metal crap. The tang could have been thicker as well.

Aaahh ... at the end of the video's on the link provided above by Bkultra, the specs are listed. The butt is powdered metal.

Yes. One of them is only about two years old. I have old ones, too. Got into a Mk2 (Marine Combat) collecting mode a few years back. Got them from Ka-Bar, Ontario, and Camillus. I also have both the original Sanvik steel Next Gen and the newer 440A one. I carried a Camillus version in Viet Nam. Had the Air Force knife, too. I just like them.
