USMC Sharpening...

I have a question regarding sharpening the my lovely USMC.

I sharpen with the Lansky system (ceramic). I don't seem to get ANY burr form at all. The blade doesn't see to feel sharp to the finger but kicks arse in the field.

Is it common that the steel doesn't form a burr? My 119 takes some honing to remove the burr completely.

Thanks!

Do you mean burr as in a wire edge? Sorry but I'm kinda trying to understand whats happening here, since I've never had any experiance with the lansky system...

The only defininite way to tell if you knife is sharp is to sclice a piece of paper with it, if you can pull of wave cuys and stuff without the paper tearing youve got a nice edge.

It's steel when the stone actually gets to the very edge it will turn a burr. Most likely your only working on the back of the bevel at this point. One trick is to use a black sharpie on the cutting edge to see where your stone is working. I think you'll find that the angle that your stone is working is not steep enough to be contacting the actual edge.

I had an older USMC that didn't have much of an edge at all. I have a large 10" X 4" DMT Duo-sharp in fine and course. I started out with the course and moved onto the fine. It took
awhile but when I was done it was hair popping sharp. I used a stiff piece of cardboard as a strop to remove any burrs.

Its 1095CV. It will burr up, you just have to go deeper.

And when you are using the Lansky, you will raise the secondary bevel near the tip. It bothers some folks, but it cuts better.

Sharpie the edge, all along when you start sharpening it, and see where you are hitting. Make adjustments as needed.

My 1217 will damn near split atoms. I use a 50 degree inclusive edge.
